LEARN
BY DYING A LOT
Medal
of Honor - PC First Person Shooter |
 |
Basically
the "Saving Private Ryan" of first person shooters,
except you do a lot more dying. The single-player mode ranges
from fun to frustrating. I found the first time through a scripted
sequence interesting, but the next ten times extremely wearisome.
You'll find yourself saving every ten seconds in some levels
as bullets come out of nowhere and shred you. If you happen
to be turned in the right direction as you die, you'll figure
out how to move the next time. Otherwise, you'll be doomed to
be killed again and again. Bad bad. The graphics are up to standard
but not stellar and the models adequate. Texturing much better
on Return to Castle Wolfenstein. Good marks for the sound effects.
The multiplayer is simply not up to Counter-Strike or Wolfenstein
standards though I like the battle-oriented maps. EA screwed
up the initial release when version one had cheats enabled.
Imagine TKers who are invulnerable too! |
OFF ROADING ON A RINGWORLD
Halo - X-Box FPS |
|
You
can see a lot of the classic Mac FPS Marathon in Halo,
where you can spend a lot of time bossing around non-player
characters (remember Bobs?) in impressive looking outside scenes
based on a ringworld environment. However, the indoor scenes
are pretty drab and the sameness of the corridor design will
bore the hell out of you. It looks like they created the fun
vehicle engine first and then built an FPS game around it. Still,
I want Kelvin to get an extra controller so we can check out
the cooperative action with one player driving and the second
player using the mounted cannon. |
