Tools
I
do mostly front end work on websites including
design, navigation, structure. To do that I usually revert back to one
of a handful of basic tools including HTML including Wordpad.
Image
Manipulation
Adobe
Photoshop 6 - The standard of image manipulation. If there's anything
I know best, it's Photoshop.
Adobe
Illustrator 7 - I use this to create vector illustrations. I find
it better to use this to create the source work for Flash.
Adobe
ImageReady - This is a separate application that comes with Photoshop
that I use to optimize graphics, slice them apart or make animated gifs.
Handy thing.
Fireworks
- I used to use this more until Adobe came out with its ImageReady component
which creates slices and image maps, and animated gifs just as well
as Fireworks.
Alias
| Wavefront Maya - This may sound extreme but sometimes I start
illustrations in 3D. It can have some interesting effects.
Web
creation
Macromedia
Dreamweaver - I only really use Dreamweaver for quick table construction
and layout editing. Since it inevitably fucks up something I then have
to get into the code in WordPad and clean it up. Never bothered to upgrade
to 4.
Adobe
GoLive - I like its site management tools. The layout module makes
my head melt.
Xenu
Link Sleuth - Mike at work found this for me to use in checking
for broken links on my work sites but it also lists all redirects and
makes you a site map. Amazing.
Videography
I've
recently acquired the hot Canon
XL1S mini-DV cam which will enable me to shoot video, dump it to
a hard drive and have it up on the web. Combine that with my web and
streaming video skillset and you have a complete solution.
Streaming
video and audio
I
wouldn't be much of an employee if I didn't toot my company's horn.
Destiny Software's Clipstream suite of audio and video streaming tools
... oh cut the sales talk. They use Java and because of that it works
everywhere. Go here for demos.
You
may notice that I don't include Flash or animation tools in this. I'm
working on it but all my Flash animations come out looking like South
Park.
Other
skills
Writing
- Unless a client provides me with text, I usually go ahead and 'make
up stuff'. Sometimes it turns out to be just what they wanted. In any
case, I'm not one to down my tools waiting for something.
