"Umbrella Killa"

A short film and music video (Fidgital's "Hit and Run") directed by me and photographed by Dylan Couper. It was shot on one day September 27/02 in DV using a Canon XL1S and a 3X wideangle. Read about the premise here, the script (.doc format) is here, a gallery of clips, stills gallery are also linked.

"Hit and Run" video reloaded
I believe that this is the proper candidate for the final "Hit and Run" video. Aside from fixing errors, the changes I made created more time for the party footage which, if you were involved in it, you'd know was one of the more involved parts of the production. I played with more splitscreening (thank you Adobe After Effects!) and threw in a hopefully funny druggie animation. Everything else was tweaking timing. See it here (same URL as before so clear your cache). (25.7mb)

  "Hit and Run" pre-release video
99.95% done now

I'm letting friends and visitors to my site take a sneak peak at the "Hit and Run" video I'd been working on for the past six months. As I said a couple days ago, I finished the post-production. Last night I did some more tweaks and rendered the entire video together. I'd love any feedback. I have some last things I have to do including fixing a matting problem and timing and titling issues.mb)

It's been a long time
But I've made some progress on editing this video. In fact, I've taken the week off so I could do this. The encode is rather poor so please ignore the quality for now.

Video deleted for space pending release of final video

You may wonder what happened with the progress on this video in the intervening months? Really, it's been a combination of many things including creative blockage. First a sickness and then lack of time. So by taking an entire week off work to concentrate on it I finally got over that first hurdle of finishing a rather dense piece of Flash animation. Roughly 1.5 days of work translated into 20 seconds of video. It sounds bad but actually it's pretty good.

First clip up
Selected stills from "Umbrella Killa"
I've made a partial gallery of stills from the filming yesterday. If you are missing from it, don't worry, I have more than 10 mbs of stills so if you want yours, I will send them to you.

Classic moments during the filming of "Umbrella Killa"
Part of the fun was experiencing what went wrong and how we overcame challenges. Actually, just seeing what went wrong is funny enough.

Thanks everyone
Thanks to everyone who helped make up the 17 member cast and crew. It was a total blast. I am exhausted and I'm sure some of you are tired too. But ther were were lots of laughs despite the endless retakes. The day for me began at 6:40 and ended at 10pm when I sent Dylan, my marvelously talented director of photography home. It was an extremely ambitious schedule that was helped by all the extra hands I had and thoughtful advice provided. As a bonus, none of us was arrested today.

Plan and future schedule
The plan is to take a week and do a rough 'highlights' reel so that people have something to look at. Then a serious edit the week following. I have around 1 hour and 15 minutes of material to render down to more than three minutes. When I have something for people to look at, the email will go out.

Help James find his cellphone
Also a note. This day was not without its casualties. James Everett, who was kind enough to arrange for the use of the roof of the ActiveState building and its interior is missing his Mitsubishi cellphone. This cellphone had a "Mask" sticker on its back. Please check your bags and pockets for it. It may have been accidentally swept up when we moved locations, particularly during our lunch hour. "beige faceplate, the rest of it is black. the sticker is kind of worn, it's like some kind of twisted hockeymask, got it off a Gorillaz sticker sheet". If you have it, please contact him at onik@apexmail.com.

TODAY WE FILM. SEE YOU ALL THERE.

Script updated. Leaving now.

Remember it's DAYLIGHT SAVINGS. Set your clocks back.

You morning people will meet at 10:30am at the McDonalds at Pacific Center downtown Dunsmuir and Granville. See you all there. Cell: 604-603-4296

Putting up a checklist
I'm making a list and checking it twice. I unwound by watching a beautifully shot movie called Himalayas about salt traders who make a twice yearly trip over the mountains to sell their village's salt. It settled me down a lot.

Last minute shopping trip
Going on a last minute shopping trip. I will be available throughout the day at 604-603-4296

First Umbrella Movie is up from DVDA
R/Kain has submitted the first Umbrella movie. It's hilarious. Check it out.

Backup location secured
Although I'm still waiting for confirmation on my initial location, I received news from James Everett that we can use the ActiveState building as a backup. Thanks James! So Sunday is a go no matter what.

Going over locations, making the Gunbrella
Dylan Couper and I went over the office location today, potentially the most difficult location. I also had a talk with the head of security there and it seems hunky dory. He only asked me 'not to blow the building up'. The night before I got material from Home Depot for the Gunbrella and spraypainted copper tubes to look like gun barrels.

The Girl, Gunbrella Prop, Killa's clothes
I've recruited my friend Brandi Wilson to be "the Girl". Today I go to Home Depot to look for a pipe and glue to convert one of the umbrellas to the Gunbrella. I had a bit of helpful advice from Sean McCardle who is a professional prop maker. Also today I secure the office location by putting down some money for security. I've also moved the Resource List to its own page. Last night I found the hat and gloves for the Killa.

I came back from Home Depot just now with pieces of copper pipe that I will fashion into the gunbarrel of the gunbrella. I experienced the joys of spraypainting them and will let them dry all night.

Everything is go for Sunday, Oct. 27st. Getting permission for the office, elevator and office building exterior location was easier than I thought. I just have to pay for a security guard (babysitter's) time at 30/hr. Thank you building manager! Today, I go shopping for costume stuff with Angus, my Killa, and his girlfriend Gillian who is a theatrical minor at UBC. Wednesday I go over the location with my DOP Dylan. There's a handful of days to go before we film. I'm nervous as hell! More coming this evening!

What is "Umbrella Killa"?
Umbrella Killa is a 3-5 minute mini-DV short that began as my submission to the DVDA Forum's second challenge: to make a 3-5 minute short using an umbrella as the prop or theme. However, after mentioning the concept to my good friend Keith Gillard, composer and musician for Fidgital, he proposed that I use the same concept for a music video for his single: "Hit and Run". I agreed and began expanding my commitment. Before this it was a quick and dirty no-permissions shoot. Now it is hopefully going to have an ounce more quality. :)

The "Umbrella Killa" story
If you want to forego reading the script, then here is the story in a nutshell. An assassin is making hits using a gun that is hidden inside an umbrella (the gunbrella). At the beginning of the story this is established when he shoots up an office. But when he exits this first hit, he accidentally bumps into an office worker who happens to be carrying the exact same model of umbrella. Of course, they switch without the other knowing what kind of umbrella they have. This leads to an unfortunate ending for both.
