Fort Scheer by Disaster (keith_loh@telus.net) Type: A German reinforced company holding a critical coastal fort overlooking a beach finds itself under assault from the sea and inland. Fort Scheer is a strong position overlooking a wide expanse of beach. It has cannon, bunkers, machineguns, soft-skinned vehicles and personnel carriers, as well as nearly two companies of regular infantry. Normally the allied invasion would bypass the fort and isolate it strategically, but an accelerated schedule has caused Scheer to be targetted for an intense assault. If the fort is not taken, all allied progress in this sector will be held back for days. The Germans are well entrenched in positions facing the sea. However, since the Normany beachhead has become consolidated, elements of the allied invaders have broken out and are encircling and mopping up defenses adjoining Normandy. This means that the German defenders must hurriedly reorient their defenses inland if they have time. The allied force is made up mostly of French and American infantry elements. And, since Fort Scheer has been named as a priority objective, the allied commander can expect decent armoured support. It won't be a walk in the park, however, as the Germans have their back to the wall and have the the advantage of interior lines of defence to help their defensive reorientation. In this early stage of the invasion both sides can call upon artillery. Objectives: The German commander must hold the fort and at least one outlying redoubt. The American / French commander must absolutely take the fort or risk losing on points. Time: 55 moves.
