On watching David Attenborough
and The Life of Birds

I really love David Attenborough nature documentaries.
They're well produced and Attenborough always comes
across as being so enthusiastic and knowledgeable. One
of the latest ones is
The Life of Birds which
follows
The Life of Mammals. I had an epiphany
while watching the episode on the "Songs of Birds".
It struck me how much early video game sound effects
sounded like bird whistles. But then, in the final segment
when Attenborough shows us the Australian Lyre Bird,
I was blown away by the bird's mimicry as it copied
nearly perfectly the sound of a camera shutter, a motor-driven
camera and even the sound of a chainsaw. I would have
refused to believe it ... that is, if Attenborough hadn't
shown it was true. You can hear a sample of the Lyre
Bird's powers on the PBS page. Scroll down and
choose
the audio clip on the right side (Real Player).
Special edition DVD sets are getting
out of hand
I don't know if this is a joke or not, but take a look
at this outrageous Alien DVD box set that looks like
the DVDs are displayed in a giant transparent Alien
head.
