Tomorrow, I go back to work
Yes, my company decided to hire me back just before my temporary layoff period would have ended. Having the time off was a bit of an eye-opener. I did get a lot of creative things done but I also saw how poor the job market was in the tech industry.

Two scripts off to Praxis
Right now Kinkos is hopefully printing off 3x2 screenplays that I will be submitting to the Praxis workshop contest. Whatever happens after I submit them, I'm pretty satisfied with my accomplishments in writing both of them in my time off. Both scripts were written fairly quickly after I planned out all my beats. One of them I outlined during the film festival as I sat waiting for films to start.

The Frontline method of going to sleep
For the past few nights I've tried to force myself to sleep in order to ready myself for going back to work. The method I've chosen involves hitting the PBS.org Frontline page and choosing one of their many archived documentaries. This is not a slam on the shows, by any means, but the combination of the narrator's bass voice, the darkness of my room and the hum of the computer can put me to sleep in ten minutes, no more. However, I've found that my sleep isn't very deep.

Jojo in the Stars / Pica Towers
Was sent this link to the website for what looks like a fabulous computer animated film by artist Marc Craste. Despite all my railing against CG in film these days, I am totally in love with the look shown in the trailer for "Jojo in the Stars" and in the three shorts under the "Pica Towers" link. I get a distinct "Delicatessen" vibe from these. The trailer is a bit enigmatic. Take a look here

Bears now suffer in Fast Food Nation
Amusing or disturbing? You decide when you read this New York Times article about how urbanized bears are hibernating less, gaining more weight, and using up less calories as they snack on human garbage. Take a look here

Hellboy trailer
One of the movies I'm anticipating with great enthusiasm is Guillermo del Toro's "Hellboy" adaptation. I enjoy the hell out of the Mike Mignola graphic novels and this trailer looks like del Toro really loves the character too. I just wish the trailer had been edited without so much of the 'fade in | fade out' business. Take a look here

It is well known now that I like to spread evil
At least in the form of evil photos I find on-line. Want to see a really bad injury from the World Weight-Lifting Championship being held in Vancouver? Take a look here

On watching old Indiana Jones movies
I borrowed my friend Jeff's box set of the Indiana Jones movies and had my memories pleasantly confirmed on the entertainment value of these old movies. Raiders of the Lost Ark(1981) is still an outstanding adventure film that is well-paced, exciting and still stands up to modern standards even with its pre-digital effects. All its practicals are excellent and the photographic and makeup FX still decent. Temple of Doom (1984) for some reason people rate lowest of the three movies. At the time parents groups disliked the children put in peril plot and many were offputted by the addition of an Indy sidekick (Short Round) and the shriekings of his new squeeze (Mrs. Spielberg Kate Capshaw). I don't mind any of those two characters. I found it a very tight stunt showcase but the setup with the villains as a resurgent thugee cult a bit moribund. In my memory, at least, my least favourite is definitely The Last Crusade (1989) which I haven't yet slotted in to remind me. I remember the third movie as a far cheaper movie than the first two without strong villains. Sean Connery as Indy's father was cute but otherwise the concept was uninspiring. One thing that stands out, in at least the first two movies, is the strong John Williams scores, not just in the main Indy theme but in the various sub themes.

Let them sing it for you
This is an amazing internet time waster. Type in the lyrics to one of your favourite songs and the site assembles clips from various recording artists approximating the song. See and here it here >>

The Fall of Otrar coming to Vancouver in January
A couple days after I pestered the programmer at the Pacific Cinematheque (the local film society) to look into screening this gem from Kazahkstan, I was informed that they were going to screen The Fall of Otrar in January. Otrar is a film I had read about in Film Comment magazine. It's about a scout who is part of Genghis Khan's army who returns to his homeland having learned that the great Khan is now setting his sights on the cosmopolitan city of Otrar. I love that part of history and look forward to seeing it portrayed on celluloid.
Wes Clark on Fox News
I've been keeping an eye on the Democratic challengers in the short time we have left until the American election year 2004. One of the newest Dem hopes is former NATO commander Wesley Clark. Clark has leadership credentials but it also looks like he has a bit of a temper. Recently he was interviewed by a FNC reporter who tried to take a Clark quote calling the Iraq war a 'sideshow' out of context resulting in Clark unleashing on him. It's quite something to see. Go to this page and then scroll down to "Setting the Record Straight".
