What goes into a heavy duty commercial shoot?
Some of the local Strobist meets can get pretty heavy duty with people lugging around batteries, mono light, dozens of reflectors and enough flashes to dazzle any celebrity; but none of that holds a candle to a full on production where it all comes together in a foreign country with all of the hassles and challenges that entails.
Luminous Landscape has a great report from high-powered photog James Russell on what happened when digital medium format maker Phase One came calling to ask him to shoot their ad. His tale runs the gamut of what happens when your assistant drives you to the wrong city to how you can deal with clients when everyone involved has come down with the flu. There isn't anything about the actual photography; more a story of how it all came together.
The article also embeds a short slideshow movie showing the behind-the-scenes stuff which contains more of the production shots. Very cool.
I also found it interesting that Russell says he builds an entire cohesive website for his output to show to clients.
