Splitting the frame: Sunset Iona Beach
This is as close to minimalism as I get. For a reason only known to my fancy I just like splitting the horizon like this. Stuff on top, stuff on the bottom, and a line separating the frame. I just like it.
This shot came out a bit grainier than I thought a 160 ISO film should be. I didn't try to denoise it. It's okay and I'll just leave it.
A little while later the horizon turned this awesome pink color; but I don't like any of the shots I took of it. If I had my 100-400L and my 30D with me I think I could have made a better image. I would have tried to isolate the nice rays coming down on the right-side. But here is what I got with my 150mm and the Mamiya.
When you take a minimalist shot of the ocean it's hard not to think of Hiroshi Sugimoto. You'll recognize his photo "Boden Sea" as the cover of one of the more recent U2 albums (as well as others).
He uses an 8x10 camera and very long exposures. The long exposures flatten the sea and give the picture overall a dreamy quality.
I have a 4x5 view camera coming my way and I hope it comes soon while I'm still inspired by large format. I'm sure I'll try a Sugimoto as one of my experiments. :)
