Shave decades off your photos: use an instant crap camera
Last week the temperature suddenly dropped a few degrees and presaged the arrival of fall so when I heard there was another photowalk planned I jumped at the chance to savour the last days of good weather. On a lark, I took among my load a really crappy camera: the Olympus Trip AF S-2.
Ever since people heard I was collecting cameras they began unloading every POS imaginable onto me. I've begun just giving them away once I determine they're worthless. This one has a venerable name: the Olympus Trip was a well-known brand in its day but this is not one of the good ones.* The extremely plastic AF S-2 has autofocus, has a flash, does detect your film ISO (DX) and does a credible job of exposing. But it just sucks. Look at it:
Hi Rob! At least I know the flash works. Initially I decided to waste some film in it because I was looking for a compact auto camera that could do street well enough. I may actually keep this one because it does make everything look retro but the 32mm lens is soft along the edges and you can't manual anything. There are two settings: Auto and Flash. Cute.
The AF seems to work well enough and I could snap quickly as in this shot. This homeless fellow didn't like it when we stumbled onto his 'house' in an alley. He blustered about smashing cameras and then later followed us and began taking our picture. Don't worry, guy, we're not going to send CSIS after you.
I also took along my Fujica -- a very good manual camera with a cloth shutter -- and my 7D. More pictures later.
Exit stage left:
*These are the good ones (Thanks, Michael).
