Day 2: Folk Festival. Better weather and fussier work

Nomadic Caravan - Medium Format - Vancouver Folk Festival 2011

Nomadic Caravan | Kodak Ektar 100 with 80mm on Mamiya 645 Pro

The last day of the Folk festival I went entirely with film to save my back and to try something different. I felt I got all my band shots out of my head on the first day and wanted to soak in the atmosphere a bit more and let things happen. Also, I bought my music-loving parents tickets and wanted to hang out a bit.

Snakes, cats, spiked heels and fire oh my

I shot serious video with my 7D for the first time last night in a model shoot with some very raw content that may never make it to this website. All in all, the video shooting came off without a hitch despite all of the factors -- not lying -- you can see in the title. Actually the snakes were not involved at all as they were needed for a stills shoot right after. I hung around to watch that and those animals are amazing.

Hopefully I will have a PG-13 video to show (and a private one for the clients *nudge nudge wink wink*). Now, it looks like I'm going to need some bigger hard drive space for all of this video editing.

Folk Festival 2010 report

Vancouver Folk Music Festival 2010-4-3

Carlos del Junco | Fujicolor Superia 200 with 300mm Tamron f/5.6

Here are a few snapshots from my three days at the Vancouver Folk Festival. Let me first tell you about this special event that I look forward to every year. Like most outdoor events in Vancouver it's kept pretty small. Jericho Park, which I explore every week now that I'm in the neighbourhood, is only a few acres square but in that area they manage to pack seven stages: one large stage with space for a few hundred lying wherever they want, and a number of smaller stages spread around the park.

Murrin Park on a last-minute hike

Murrin Park Cliff_

Murrin Park Cliff | Kodak Tmax 100 using 45mm on Mamiya 645 Pro

On the weekend I was recruited to go on a last minute hike at a park I've never visited so of course I said yes and threw a bunch of film and lenses into my bag and went off.

What I didn't know is that I would be struggling through some narrow trails in a mostly vertical incline for half an hour. Also stupidly, I'd eaten very little before going -- counting on half a pack of Gummi Bears to provide some energy. That stupidity caught up to me mid-way through the climb and crashed hard. Only eating an apple got me out of that.

Baby Shoot part two coming up: my home diffuse lighting setup

Family Portrait

Tannis, Dylan, and the surprisingly cooperative Lily | Tamron 28-75mm on Canon 30D | toplighting with large softbox and silk diffusion layer

Had a blast last night doing some family portraits for good friends of mine. I took some of the learning I used earlier this week in Wayne Höecherl's lighting course (results in the last post) and applied it to my lowly home studio.

It's a wrap: Kootenays by film

I mean as far as taking a trip somewhere and taking only film. As I said a couple weeks ago, I was going to take a chance by taking only film cameras just like in the days before digital. No second chances, just whatever was in your film body and whatever my light meters and my head used.

In case you haven't found your way there yet, take a look at my slideshow for the whole deal or click below.

We hope you enjoyed your stay in the Kootenays
