Halloween Sidewalk portraits & Seabus party
Still a bit tired out from last night. I spent about two hours with the Seabus party people riding the ferry from downtown Vancouver to North Vancouver; then onto a nearby wharf where they partied it up for a little while. During that time I did some portraits with my extremely portable setup.
At first I was considering lugging my mono-light and battery with me to the party but sanity took over and instead I just took one light stand, a "potato-masher" style flash and the very handy and light mini-softbox (a Photoflex Litedome QR). That way all I had to bring was one bag and carry the lightstand -- and I was in costume.
At the party site all I needed to do was pick a spot just off the main traffic and then try and grab people to shoot. Actually it wouldn't have gotten together so well if the party organizers -- Vancouver Public Space Network -- hadn't started pointing people in my direction.
It was so light that when it came time for the Seabus to leave again I could pick up the lightstand, compress the legs and then run for it. As it was, I nearly didn't make it after my Litedome fell off the stand. A Seabus employee helped pick it up and I was on as the doors sealed.
My night wasn't over because right outside the station I lingered and grabbed people I hadn't managed to shoot and then, because it was the train station too, I snagged anyone who had any kind of costume.

And after that dried up I headed up to the main club strip and outside of a few clubs on Granville I stopped people in the street. It helped that I was in costume. Of course got lots of nos but mostly yesses.

I have a big set of all the costumes I shot last night on Flickr. If I spoke to you and you didn't see it here on my blog, take a look at my set on Flickr.
Love Halloween. Don't you?
